- Blackberry Filling
- 4 cups fresh or frozen blackberries
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 2 cups water
- 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon optional
- Dumplings
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 2 teaspoons baking powder
- ½ teaspoon salt
- 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
- ½ cup whole milk
- 4 tablespoons unsalted butter melted
- Optional Toppings
- Vanilla ice cream
- Fresh whipped cream
- Powdered sugar
- Lemon zest
- Fresh mint leaves
In a large Dutch oven, combine the blackberries, sugar, water, lemon juice, vanilla extract, and cinnamon. Bring to a gentle boil over medium heat and cook for 8–10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the berries soften and release their juices.
In a mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, salt, and sugar. Stir in the milk and melted butter just until a soft dough forms. Do not overmix.
Drop spoonfuls of the dumpling dough directly into the simmering blackberry mixture, leaving a little space between each dumpling.
Cover with a tight-fitting lid and simmer over low heat for 15–18 minutes without lifting the lid, until the dumplings are cooked through and fluffy.
Remove from the heat and let the dumplings rest for 5 minutes. The blackberry sauce will thicken slightly as it cools.
Serve warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream, whipped cream, or a dusting of powdered sugar, if desired.
- Fresh blackberries provide the best flavor, but frozen berries work just as well.
- Avoid overmixing the dumpling dough to keep it light and fluffy.
- Keep the lid closed while the dumplings cook so they steam properly.
- Add a little extra lemon juice for a brighter berry flavor.
- If you prefer a thicker sauce, stir in a cornstarch slurry before adding the dumplings.
