- For the Sloppy Joe Filling
- 1 lb lean ground beef
- 1 tbsp olive oil
- ½ medium onion finely diced
- ½ green bell pepper diced
- 2 cloves garlic minced
- 1 cup tomato sauce
- 2 tbsp ketchup
- 1 tbsp tomato paste
- 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tbsp brown sugar
- 1 tsp yellow mustard
- ½ tsp smoked paprika
- ½ tsp chili powder
- ½ tsp salt
- ¼ tsp black pepper
- For the Bread
- 1 large French bread loaf
- 2 tbsp butter melted
- 1 tsp garlic powder
- 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
- 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
- Fresh parsley chopped (optional)
Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Slice the French bread into thick slices or split it lengthwise. Mix the melted butter with garlic powder and brush over the bread. Arrange on a baking sheet.
Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add onion and green bell pepper and cook for 4–5 minutes until softened. Stir in the garlic and cook for 30 seconds.
Add the ground beef and cook until browned, breaking it into crumbles. Drain any excess grease.
Stir in the tomato sauce, ketchup, tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, brown sugar, mustard, smoked paprika, chili powder, salt, and black pepper. Simmer for 8–10 minutes until thickened.
Spoon the sloppy joe mixture evenly over each bread slice. Sprinkle generously with mozzarella and cheddar cheese.
Bake for 10–12 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly. Broil for 1–2 minutes for a golden top if desired.
Garnish with chopped parsley and serve immediately.
Notes
- Toast the bread for 5 minutes before adding the filling if you prefer extra crispy bread.
- Freshly shredded cheese melts better than pre-shredded cheese.
- Let the meat mixture simmer until thick to prevent soggy bread.
- Ground turkey or ground chicken can be substituted for beef.
- Add jalapeños or crushed red pepper flakes for extra heat.
